History:
In the early days, recreational activities were limited to hiking, camping, and turkey-shoots using muzzle-loaded guns. Participants’ prizes would be hog hams, turkeys, and sides of beef. Then horse racing became a popular sport, along with stunts on horseback. It has been said that Captain W. P. Moore, a Civil War Veteran, on his steed Crocket, at full gallop, could lean over sideways in his saddle and pick up a lady’s handkerchief off the ground. By 1920, Ed Curtis and Frank Herbert, Jr. had built Carroll Lake, a 20-acre site near Fires Creek Road, west of downtown Hayesville, which became the area’s first recreational complex, offering boating, swimming, and a snack bar.
