Camping enthusiasts can enjoy roughing it, tenting, or renting trailer sites throughout the County in private campgrounds and those managed by the National Park Service and the County Government.
The Nantahala National Forest Service operates the following campgrounds: Jackrabbit Mountain Park, southeast of Hayesville on NC 175, and Fires Creek Recreational Area on the west side of town. Jackrabbit also has sites for recreational vehicles (RVs) and water recreation, including swimming, tubing, boating, waterskiing, jet skiing, and fishing. Fires Creek offers hiking, picnic facilities, horseback riding, and fishing. On Myers Chapel Road, the County Government operates the Clay County Recreational Park and the Gibson Cove Campground. Both offer tent and RV campsites with full hook-ups; also, swimming areas, bath houses, and restrooms. The Clay County Park has an enclosed playground facility, a softball field, several lakefront picnic tables, 2 with covered sheds, and a pavilion that is maintained by the local Lions Club. All the Park’s facilities, except camping and RV sites, are free for the public’s use. The largest private campgrounds in the County are Ho-Hum on NC Highway 175, southeast of Hayesville, and Sundowner on NC Highway 69 South, near the Georgia State Line, and the Tusquittee Campground on Tusquittee Road, seven miles north of Hayesville.
