Religion

Many places of worship are located throughout Clay County, providing a diversity of religious opportunities for people to practice their faiths.  These include Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal, Catholic, Nazarene, and many charismatic churches. Only the largest congregations in each of these categories are highlighted in this chapter.

The early settlers quickly established churches and began practicing their beliefs.  The earliest recorded church activity was in l838 by the Presbyterian Church, located in the vicinity of Fort Hembree, on the south side of today’s town of Hayesville.  That same year the Methodists built a church also near the Fort and, in 1840, the Baptists built their church in the same area.  Since then many churches have been established in the County and, over time, some were demolished or merged with others.  Today there are 48 churches in the County, and the largest group is Baptist with 27 buildings.
