In 1974 a visionary, Mrs. Gertrude Price, organized the Council because she strongly believed in preserving the heritage of Clay County’s history and wanted to develop the Arts. One of the first projects undertaken was establishing a County Museum, for which the County Commissioners agreed to lease the vacated two-story old brick jail building to the Council for $l.00 per year. One of the first exhibits displayed was the Spike Buck artifacts from an archaeological dig by Western Carolina College, now a university. Other permanent exhibits were added: the first telephone switchboard, an old weaving loom dating to the l800s, and recently, Dr. Carl Dan Killian’s “office.”
The Council has been very active in starting cultural and art programs, such as The Licklog Players, which stages three to five plays each year at the Peacock Playhouse, located at 301 Church Street and built in l983 by Lillith Lidseen. Sadly, she died before seeing a production in her theater. The yearly Festival on the Square is another popular project started by the Council. It is held the second weekend in July, when the square is laid off for booth space from which various craft vendors sell their arts for themselves and as the major fundraiser for the Council.
