Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University (W. C. U.) has also played a very important part in educating Clay County citizens.  It was founded in 1888 as the regional university, located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, near the southern side of the Smoky Mountains range, approximately 54 miles northeast of Hayesville.  Many of the graduating seniors from Hayesville High School attend W. C. U. each year and can receive four-year degrees (either Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts) in public school teaching, nursing, business, science, and other degrees.  At one time, 80% of the teachers in the Clay County School System received teaching degrees from Western Carolina University.
