Walter J. Moore (1902−1995) was an educator and businessman, who made many contributions toward economically developing the County. After graduation from Western Carolina Teachers College, he taught at Hayesville High School and later became its Principal. He worked in several business ventures, including the County’s first motel and restaurant complex. He also started a “bread and breakfast” inn on Lake Chatuge (Hinton Center Road) and owned Clay County Hardware. He and his wife Velma donated land for the Methodist Hinton Life Center and helped develop it.
