Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

The Allison-Bristol Post was named in honor of Sammy Allison and Sam J. Bristol, Jr., who were the last and first, respectively, “Sons of Clay County” to be killed in action during World War II.  The Post officially joined the national organization of Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States on December 10, 1953.  The first officers of the Post were Commander William T. “Jack” Groves and Quartermaster George Anderson.  In 1956 the Post purchased several acres of land and erected an old army surplus Quonset hut, which served as a meeting place for the Post, for square dances, as a skating rink, and for a variety of Community social events (Ibid. Padgett).  Today the Post is housed in a newer building, which is named for a loyal member, John C. Corn, a WW II veteran and a slave descendant.  The building is located adjacent to the Quonset hut on Myers Chapel Road within the Hayesville Town limits.
