Velma Beam Moore

Velma Beam Moore (1903−1998) personified the old saying, “Dynamite comes in small packages!”  She blasted into the County in 1941 as an Assistant Home Demonstration Agent, hitting the ground running and never stopped!  Her drive and enthusiasm was contagious, affecting everyone she met.  During her 17 years as Assistant Agent, she organized Demonstration Clubs throughout the County, teaching homemakers how to preserve food, proper nutrition, and how to create and manage household budgets.  Food processing and preparation was her specialty, so she introduced the “pressure canner” and gave demonstrations as to its effectiveness in preserving food safely.  She advocated including soybeans in the diet as being very beneficial in good nutritional health.  The word “retired” was never in her vocabulary, because she was a very active person who also served in almost every leadership position in the Methodist Church.  If the Church had accepted female ministers in her day, she surely would have been among the first!  She and her husband donated land and the building that became the Hinton Center, a Methodist religious mission center.  Later they established a combination bed and breakfast inn and a public restaurant, known as Wonder View, which gained wide popularity and was written about in the magazine, Southern Living.
