Tri-County Community College offers vocational and technical courses for Clay County and two more neighboring counties, Cherokee and Graham. Fortunately, all of these educational offerings are within reasonable commuting distances. Students can also transfer in from other colleges. Each of the three counties contributes funds to support the college operations. Tri-County is located on the site of an old State Prison on U.S. Highway 64 West, nine miles from Hayesville, and was first started as an Industrial Education Center on November 5, l964, to serve the three counties with vocational and trade courses. Later, in 1978, the Center became a Technical Institute. Then, by an Act of the North Carolina Legislature, it became a two-year Community College. In 1985 the College achieved prestigious status when it became a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. Each graduate of a degree program receives an Associate Degree, and a student completing a prescribed vocational program receives a Certificate.
