The Clay Lodge No. 301, Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons was charted on December 8, 1869, and is the oldest organization in Clay County. The Lodge coordinates Community projects with other local organizations. The Masonic movement began with the Roman Empire and the use of the name “Free Mason” appeared in Europe as early as 12l2 A.D., where it was a secret organization of builders who passed on their building trade secrets. Many of the magnificent cathedrals they constructed in the Middle Ages and Renaissance Period exist today. An excellent source for details about the history of this organization is found in Guy Padgett’s 1976 book, History of Clay County.
