Dr. Leon R. Staton (1905−1976) moved to the County in 1940 and began his practice as a country doctor who made “house calls.” Dr. Staton is remembered for his kind mannerisms and for his compassion to mothers during child birth. For a number of years, he served without pay as the physician for the Hayesville High School athletic program. He worked with the local Draft Board for 25 years. Few people achieve the distinction of rendering such important services to their community as he did.
