John C. Campbell Folks School was founded in 1925 in adjacent Cherokee County in the Brasstown Community on Brasstown Road, off Old U.S. Highway 64, approximately eight miles west of Hayesville. The school has gained an international reputation as being an outstanding crafts and arts school. Students from all over the United States and foreign countries enroll in short courses, such as blacksmithing, weaving, painting, wood carving, creative writing, musical instruments, and dance. Courses are taught all year, including the summer months, and lodging is also available for those not living close by. Students from Clay County can take advantage of these courses at a reduced tuition rate. The school also sponsors many cultural events throughout the year, such as the Brasstown Concert Programs and a variety of performing folk artists. With great pride, the School holds its very popular annual Folk Arts Festival every October.
