Guy Padgett

Guy Padgett (1906−1978) was an author and publisher, who lived most of his life in Clay County.  He wrote and published the first history book of the County, “History of Clay County 1871 to 196l.”  In 1939, he and his wife Lucile acquired the local newspaper, Clay County News, and published it until 1942, when the scarcity of paper during WWII stopped production.  After the war in 1948, Guy, an Army veteran, resumed his responsibility as Manager and became Chief Editor of the newspaper.  In the November 27, 1974 issue of Cherokee County newspaper, he wrote an in-depth article entitled, “Padgett Writes of History of Journalism in Clay County,” in which he gives the names of the many owners of the various County newspapers and describes the title changes over time.    He also enjoyed preparing and eating turtle meat.  As a youngster, this Author remembers catching turtles in Peckerwood Creek and giving them to Guy on his route (Route 1) as mail carrier!
