The CCCRA was established by charter in December 1998 by a group of concerned citizens, whose goal is to enhance the esthetics of buildings, streets and plant life, in order to make living spaces pleasant and better. With grant monies and public donations, an all-volunteer team has conducted major revitalization projects that add to civic pride, such as arresting deterioration of the historic 1889 courthouse, for which they installed a drainage system to control moisture and replaced windows and lights. They also replaced diseased trees, planted shrubs and flowers, and placed trash receptacles on the town square. In addition, they replaced worn out kitchen equipment in the County Extension Agent’s office and cleaned up highway and roadside litter. Being ecologically aware, they built an “outdoor classroom” boardwalk at a pond on the school campus, and, with students, installed murals of County scenes on building walls downtown.
