Clay County Chamber of Commerce

Prior to 1982, the first attempt to organize the Clay County Chamber of Commerce was started by a group of realtors, whose only purpose was to catch any and all inquiries about Clay County in an effort to sell property.  However, Harold Lance, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, soon approached Dr. Russell “Rusty” Hughes and asked that he form a non-partisan committee to start a Chamber of Commerce that would work to foster an orderly and sustained economic growth for the County.  He recruited Charlie Wellard and Carl Moore, and the committee of three functioned for about two and a half years.  Then, in 1988 another group was formed and the Chamber was officially chartered that year, establishing as their purpose:
“to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the citizens and businesses of Clay County” (from Clay County Chamber of Commerce By-Laws, Article I Section 2, “Purpose”).  The Chamber’s work is very important to the area as it strives “to enhance the County’s unique resources of scenic beauty amid clean and healthful surroundings” (Ibid.).  The primary goal of the Chamber is to work with businesses, industries, and residents to disseminate information, as well as sponsor activities for the Community.  The Chamber sponsors and participates in the Business Expo, the Bass Fishing Tournament, the Mountain Golf Tournament, and Halloween’s “Trick-or-Treat on the Square.”
