Christine Prater (born in 1914) said in a personal telephone interview with Carl Moore, “I was elected in 1955 as the first female Mayor of the town of Hayesville, and possibly (the first) in the entire State of North Carolina!” She was employed by Citizens Bank and served as a Vice President for 18 years, until the bank merged with Wachovia Bank in 1970. While serving another nine years with Wachovia, her supervisor, Tom Day, encouraged her to organize the first ladies golf club in the County, which she did. Christine retired from the banking industry after 27 years.
