Allen J. Bell (1896−1956) attended Hayesville High School, then nearby Young Harris College (in Georgia), and the University of North Carolina. After his formal education, he returned to Clay County and became its second County Superintendent of Schools, serving the longest term in the County’s history, 35 years, from 1921 to 1956.
